Olympic Winter Games 2026

On the occasion of the Olympic Winter Games 2026, which will take place in Italy in February, Philatelie Liechtenstein is issuing a special postage stamp. The issue refers both to the international sporting event and to the participation of the Liechtenstein Olympic Team, placing the Games in a philatelic context.
The stamp entitled “Olympic Flame”, with a face value of CHF 1.20, features the Olympic flame at its centre. Traditionally lit in the ruins of ancient Olympia in Greece, it is one of the most enduring symbols of the Olympic Games. It represents the connection between past and present as well as values such as peace, unity and fairness that define the Olympic spirit.
The design is complemented by the logo of the Liechtenstein Olympic Team and the official word mark “Milano Cortina 2026”. In the background, a wintery mountain range inspired by the Tofane massif in the Dolomites near Cortina d’Ampezzo is depicted. This landscape element refers to the alpine character of the host regions and establishes a geographical connection to the Winter Games without placing the sporting aspect at the forefront.
The design of the stamp thus brings together symbolic, institutional and landscape elements in a clear and restrained visual statement. As part of the official stamp issues of the Principality of Liechtenstein, it documents the Olympic Winter Games 2026 not only as a major sporting event but also as a time-specific cultural occasion that is permanently recorded in philately.

Carnival – A Tradition as a Definitive Stamp

With a new series of self-adhesive definitive stamps, Philatelie Liechtenstein turns its attention to Carnival, a tradition that is firmly rooted in the social life of the country. The term “Fasnacht” originates from Middle High German and originally referred to the night before the beginning of the Christian fasting period. Today, it stands for a time of public celebration, disguise and the temporary reversal of customary roles.
The colourful design of the stamps reflects the various forms of expression through which Carnival is celebrated in Liechtenstein. After the turn of the year, decorations, masked balls and parades shape the appearance of towns and villages. A central reference point is the international parade in Schaan, which attracts numerous participants, holds a fixed place in the Carnival calendar and appears as the motif of the CHF 1.00 denomination.
Additional stamps focus on individual customs and forms of expression. “Soup Pot” (CHF 1.20) recalls a practice that is now rarely observed, in which young people on Shrove Thursday attempted to lure housewives away from their kitchens. Much more prominent in today’s Carnival celebrations is “Guggen Music” (CHF 1.90): elaborately costumed groups that accompany numerous events and public performances with loud, deliberately unconventional music.
Finally, the denomination “Masks” (CHF 2.50) reflects the diversity of costumes that is characteristic of Carnival. This picture is complemented by the traditional Carnival newspapers, which are published annually and comment on events and mishaps of the past year with a satirical eye. Taken as a whole, the definitive stamp series presents a multifaceted portrayal of a living tradition that bridges historical origins and contemporary practice.

EUROPE – 70 Years PostEurop
With this special stamp issued in 2026, Philatelie Liechtenstein takes part in the 70th anniversary of the EUROPA stamp and of PostEurop. Since 1956, PostEurop has provided the organizational framework for cooperation among European postal administrations and serves as the body responsible for the EUROPA stamp programme, which is regarded as a shared symbol of European unity.
The anniversary theme “70th Anniversary of the EUROPA Stamp: United in …” was announced through an international competition organized by the PostEurop Stamps and Philately Working Group. A total of 15 postal organizations submitted designs, which were voted on by the members. The selected winning design will be adopted in 2026 by around 50 European postal administrations as a common design and issued in national versions.
The competition entry submitted by Posti Ltd, Finland, was selected for implementation. The design was created by designer Klaus Welp in collaboration with Posti’s Design Manager. The motif combines abstract and symbolic elements: a diagonally ascending dotted line refers both to the perforation of a postage stamp and to the continuous development of European postal cooperation. Seven dots symbolically represent seven decades of joint efforts by the postal administrations. Colour gradients and dotted structures draw on the colours of Europe and stand for unity, communication and cooperation across national borders.
Through the Europe-wide use of this shared design, the EUROPA stamps of 2026 honour seven decades of shared philatelic tradition and underscore the role of well-functioning postal systems as a unifying element within Europe.
