October 2025 – Micro-Animals: Belgium Celebrates the Nearly Invisible

Belgien 2025 Microanimaux - ganzes SheetletIn October 2025, Belgium released an extraordinary souvenir sheet featuring five micro-stamps that reveal a world usually hidden from the naked eye: Microanimaux. The stamps are extremely small—10 × 20 mm—making them among the most fascinating modern issues in European philately.

When I first saw the Microanimaux souvenir sheet from Belgium (October 2025), it was immediately clear to me that this was more than just a visually appealing issue. Five extremely small stamps depict living organisms that are barely noticed in everyday life. It is precisely this combination of invisibility, science, and philately that convinced me.

The souvenir sheet was designed by Sven Bellanger, whose minimalist style perfectly suits the theme. The stamps are as small as their subjects—and for me, that is exactly where their appeal lies.

The Micro-Animals – Small but Significant

Belgien 2025 WasserflohWater Flea (Daphnia pulex)
An inconspicuous organism that plays a major role in aquatic research. For me, this stamp represents ecological relationships that are often overlooked—just like the water flea itself.

Belgien 2025 CyclopsCyclops (Cyclops strenuus)
There is no widely used German common name, but the single “cyclopean eye” makes it unmistakable. From a philatelic perspective, I particularly appreciate that Belgium chose a subject that is deliberately not well known.

Belgien 2025 CaenorhabitisTransparent Roundworm (Caenorhabditis elegans)
A superstar of modern biology. Featuring a genetic model organism on a postage stamp shows, to me, how open-minded and contemporary philately can be today.

Belgien 2025 RädertierchenRotifer (Philodina, Rotifera)
Rotifers fascinate me because of their ability to survive extreme desiccation. On this miniature stamp, they almost become a symbol of survival on the smallest scale.

Belgien 2025 BärtierchenTardigrade (Tardigrada, “Water Bear”)
Hardly any micro-animal has gained such popularity. Their legendary resilience—even in outer space—makes them a perfect conclusion to this set.

Mikrotierechen Belgien 2025

I chose Microanimaux as the Stamp of the Month for October because form and content come together here in an exceptional way: tiny living organisms on tiny stamps. It is a fine example of the current trend toward viewing postage stamps as conceptual miniature artworks. This is not a gimmick, but a well-thought-out concept—precisely because the stamps themselves are extremely small, the boundary between subject and medium is elegantly dissolved. It is a modern statement of Belgian philately.

The combination of a minute format, a scientific theme, and precise design makes this issue especially appealing to thematic collectors (biology, microworlds, science) as well as to lovers of unusual formats. For me, this issue demonstrates that modern philately can spark curiosity—about nature, science, and about what we usually overlook.
