In memoriam Fürstin Marie von und zu Liechtenstein

Stempel Fürstin Marie

In August 2021, Princess Marie von und zu Liechtenstein passed away at the age of 82. With the noble special souvenir sheet “I.D. Princess Marie” (value CHF 6.30), Philately Liechtenstein now honors the life and work of the Princess.

Marie Aglaë Bonaventura Theresia was born Countess Kinsky von Wchinitz und Tettau in Prague on April 14, 1940, and grew up in Germany after her family fled the former Czechoslovakia. She studied commercial art and also worked as a commercial artist in Dachau until her marriage. After marrying the then hereditary prince Hans-Adam II in 1967, she devoted herself primarily to her family with their four children Alois, Maximilian, Constantin and Tatjana. After Hans-Adam II was appointed permanent deputy by his father Prince Franz Josef II in 1984 and entrusted with the conduct of state affairs, the Princess henceforth performed representative duties alongside her husband.

100. anniversary of Oskar Werner

Oskar Werner – a world-renowned Austrian actor – would have turned 100 this year. Three special stamps with illustrations of the artist, who was born in Vienna in 1922, pay tribute to his life and career.

Oskar Werner was already acting during his school years. Extras roles in film productions and first speaking roles in radio, cabaret and theatre paved his career path at a young age. From 1938 to 1974, Werner was engaged as “The Actor” (value CHF 0.90) with the charismatic voice for numerous film and theatre roles. For in addition to his acting successes, Werner achieved great fame and popularity through his unmistakable voice, which with its gentle, poetic modulation and characteristic Viennese speech colouration still exudes a special fascination today. This is particularly evident in the radio drama productions and readings in which he participated as a narrator, and which played an increasingly important role in the last phase of his life. Werner’s voice is still parodied again and again in commercials and cabaret.

Oskar Werner1952 “Oskar Werner” (value CHF 1.10) purchased a plot of land in the community of Triesen and built a house on it, which enabled him to live in seclusion for many years. At the gate to his property hung a sign with the inscription: “Granted that I request, no unannounced visits. Private – no visitors please. No wonder “The Private Person” (value CHF 0.90) Oskar Werner, is often described as difficult and eccentric. At the end of his life, Oskar Werner struggled with depression and alcohol addiction. After his early death from a heart attack at the age of 62, he was buried at his request in Triesen in 1984, although he was entitled to a grave of honour in Vienna. In 2011, his remains were exhumed and cremated and his urn was buried in the southwest corner of the cemetery, where a plaque still commemorates him today.

SEPAC – lokale Getränke

Stempel WasserThis year’s stamp issue by SEPAC, an association of thirteen small postal organizations in Europe, focuses on local beverages from the countries of origin of its members. Philately Liechtenstein chose a thirst quencher that comes in top quality from every tap and many public fountains in Liechtenstein: “drinking water” (value CHF 1.80).

SEpac WasserUnimaginable for many people in large parts of the world, people in the Alpine country enjoy fresh water straight from the tap. Here, around half of the drinking water consumed each year is obtained from groundwater, the other half from spring water. Seven public water supply companies are responsible for this. To ensure that the drinking water reaches homes in top quality, the organizations maintain numerous reservoirs and other structures such as transfer shafts in addition to the spring catchments and pumping stations. Almost 430 kilometres of main pipelines and 270 kilometres of service lines are available to transport the water.

Berg-Panorama

Stempal PanormaBreathtaking drone shots of the local Alpine world open up previously unknown perspectives and fascinating far-reaching views on two new panorama special stamps. One of the motifs shows the 1997 meter high “Alpspitz” (left and right, value CHF 1.10 each) in the middle of the Rätikon mountain range. On the summit, Liechtenstein’s oldest summit cross welcomes enthusiastic mountain sports enthusiasts and view lovers all year round. The Alpspitz lies on Liechtenstein’s most famous high-altitude hiking trail, the Fürstensteig, built-in 1898. This is a much-frequented hiking classic in summer. Alternatively, or in the colder season, you can reach the summit of the Alpspitz on a hiking trail past the Alp Bargälla and over the Bargälla saddle.

Panorama IThe area around the “Drei Kapuziner” (left and right, value CHF 1.10 each) is also a popular Liechtenstein hiking area. As seen from Alp Guschg, the rocky heads of the mountain are reminiscent of monks. These give it its special name. Situated southwest of the popular Schönberg and northwest of the Stachlerkopf, the 2084-meter-high mountain offers mountain hikers a fascinating panoramic view from Graubünden to Lake Constance.
