This beautiful souvenir sheet designed by Juha Pykäläinen appeared on the occasion of the national maritime folk festival Sail Åland on July 22-25, 2021, showing the Western Harbour with sailing ships visiting Mariehamn (the capital of the Åland Islands). The sailing ship Pomerania recalls Åland’s own shipping traditions. This souvenir sheet is accompanied by a stamp showing young people on a sailing ship. Actually, this issue was created on the occasion of the Tall Ship Race in 2021, in which Marienhamm would have been a stage destination. However, this major event was canceled due to the Covid pandemic.
The Tall Ship Races take place annually in European waters and are regattas for sail training ships (tall ships). Usually, about 100 tall ships participate in these races. A special feature of these races is that for the race the crew consists of at least 50% young people aged 15-25 years because these races should not only arouse enthusiasm for these large ships but also promote international friendship and training of young people in the art of sailing.
