The Hungarian Post is celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Rubik’s Cube® with a special stamp issue. The Rubik’s Cube®, originally called the “Magic Cube,” was invented by Ernő Rubik in 1975 and patented in 1977. To mark this occasion, a numbered souvenir sheet featuring a scrambled Rubik’s Cube® will be released, along with an exclusive stamp set available in two versions: one to be assembled by the buyer and one in the pre-assembled cube shape. These special editions will be available in Hungary starting January 30, 2025.
The Rubik’s Cube® has become a global icon since its invention, not only as a popular puzzle but also as an essential piece of equipment in speedcubing competitions. It challenges creativity, concentration, and problem-solving abilities, revolutionizing toy design. The Cube has inspired numerous books, plays, and Hollywood movies and is used in international speed-solving events. Its global significance is also reflected in its prominent place in philately, where it continues to capture the imagination of collectors and enthusiasts alike.
In addition to the stamp issue, there is also a first-day cover featuring the retro design of the Rubik’s Cube®. The official logo “50 Years of the Rubik’s Cube®” appears on the special stamp, the envelope, and the postmark. The limited edition includes 2,000 copies of the standard version, sold in a resealable case, and 1,000 copies of the exclusive plastic box edition. The cube-shaped version is available exclusively at specialized postal services and Filaposta.
