Jan. 26 – Forget the runway – the most exciting fashion is stuck on a postage stamp

Belgien 2026 - Hüte

There are stamps – and then there are those that feel like more than just postage. Belgium released new issues in January 2025, but one miniature sheet stands out in particular: a tribute to hat designer Elvis Pompilio. From the very first glance, it’s clear that this is less about function and more about expression.

At 65, Pompilio is one of the defining figures of the Belgian fashion scene. His extravagant hat designs are internationally sought after – to this day, around 30,000 handcrafted pieces are created each year, many worn by prominent personalities. The miniature sheet itself reads like a visual statement: shaped like a head, filled with vibrant colors and dynamic forms. Five stamps feature his creations, complemented by his signature – personal, almost intimate.

The design thrives on contrast. At its center is an elegant portrait, while colors and shapes seem to explode around it. Small, playful hats appear to dance across the surface, giving the composition an almost theatrical lightness. What emerges is less a traditional postal product and more a piece of modern art – bold, expressive, and deliberately eye-catching.

That a hat designer appears on a stamp is no coincidence. Stamps have long served as cultural ambassadors of a country – small visual spaces where identity is condensed. When fashion finds its place here, it becomes more than design: it becomes a statement. In Pompilio’s case, it reflects a Belgium that celebrates creativity and confidently presents its design culture to the world.

🇱🇮 Between spectacle and everyday life

Yet it is precisely at this point that another perspective emerges. While Belgium stages fashion as something bold, experimental, and highly visible, it takes on a very different character elsewhere. In Liechtenstein, it remains understated, almost quiet.

Here, fashion is less a spectacle and more a part of everyday life – shaped by tradition, quality, and longevity. In Vaduz, traditional costumes, craftsmanship, and small boutiques define a style that doesn’t need to stand out to have meaning.

It is within this contrast that a shared truth becomes visible. Fashion always tells a story about the place it comes from. Whether as an avant-garde statement on a Belgian stamp or as a lived tradition in the Alps, it remains a cultural language that transcends borders.

A stamp carries more than just a value – it carries an idea. And as it travels around the world, fashion reveals itself in all its facets: bold and quiet, striking and effortless. Perhaps that is its greatest strength.
