February 2022 – An empty canvas

LeinwandDid you know that Swiss Post has been collecting and promoting contemporary art since 1924? Today, the collection comprises around 400 works. Swiss Post is a pioneer in the field of corporate art collections and in the promotion of art and culture. Established in 2020, the three pillars include the art collection, as well as art on buildings and Swiss Post’s commitment to art in the periphery. More details on this commitment can be found under this Link.

To draw attention to these activities of theirs, Swiss Post has now issued a special stamp in 2021 that focuses on the “Art Collection” pillar. Surprisingly, the stamp is “blank”. But if you look closer you can see that the stamp is printed on canvas. The idea behind this empty canvas is that the canvas can be seen as a symbol of art in general, and when it is empty, it symbolizes the art that could not be realized. E.g. because there was no suitable funding.

In fact, the stamp is something special – a work of art in itself. It is intricately produced, you can feel the canvas surface and the stamp is available both individually and in a miniature sheet with an imprinted QR code that, when accessed, provides more information about the stamp.

More information, as well as a film of how this stamp was made, can be found at this Link.
